Review

Have you ever watched a movie that left you feeling warm and fuzzy inside, with a renewed belief in the power of love, family, and fate? Well, if you haven’t yet, then ‘It Takes Two’ is definitely the one movie that you should add to your must-watch list. This 1995 romantic comedy has everything you need to experience a great time – humor, heartwarming moments, classic ’90s fashion, and of course, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

The storyline follows Alyssa Callaway (Ashley Olsen), an orphaned girl who is about to be adopted by socialite Roger Callaway (Steve Guttenberg). Meanwhile, Amanda Lemmon (Mary-Kate Olsen) is living a completely different life in foster care with her street-smart attitude. The two girls couldn’t be more different from each other in personalities and lifestyles but find their worlds colliding in a summer camp after they bump into each other and notice their striking resemblance.

As fate would have it, the girls decide to scheme up a plan that will help Alyssa escape her inevitable adoption into a family she doesn’t want and give Amanda the loving home she dreams of. The plan: switch places. With the help of camp counselor Diane Barrows (Kirstie Alley), the girls set off on an adventure to switch places and hopefully find what they’re both looking for.

Undoubtedly, this charming plotline makes for an entertaining watch. But what sets ‘It Takes Two’ apart from other similar movies is its cast. Aside from its young leading ladies – who were already established celebrities at the time – the film also features Steve Guttenberg as Roger Callaway, Kristie Alley as Diane Barrows and Philip Bosco as Vincenzo Di Santi.

The cast’s performances were exceptional; Mary-Kate’s portrayal of Amanda was particularly impressive as she brought depth to the typical “street-smart New Yorker” character. Her quick wit and charm added layers to Amanda’s persona, making her more than just a sassy sidekick. Ashley, on the other hand, played Alyssa with a vulnerability that made her relatable and endearing.

Despite stardom fame and success at their young age, the Olsen’s chemistry on-screen was remarkable; they were able to execute their signature style of humor and comedic timing flawlessly. As Malcolm Gladwell puts it, “a great actor is someone who can make you believe in the world they’re creating and leave you feeling it was all real.” The Olsen twins accomplished this with flying colors.

Another aspect that sets ‘It Takes Two’ apart from other ’90s movies is its relatability. Though the story seems to come out of a fairy tale book – two girls switching places to get what they want – ‘It Takes Two’ explores some real-life emotions that are universal in people, especially children.

The film handles sensitive issues such as adoption, divorce, loneliness, and feeling different from everyone else with sensitivity but still providing comedic relief for young audiences that can relate to these struggles. It shows how these issues affect the kids’ actions and decisions despite being mere children.

One of the movie’s strongest moments has to be when Roger and Diane realize the girls have switched places but decide not to tell them immediately since they both seem happier than ever before. The scene exhibits how some family setups may affect children more than adults realize; hence it’s vital for adults around them play close attention.

From a production standpoint, ‘It Takes Two’ received mixed reviews. Its cinematography has been deemed average at best with hasty editing between scenes that sometimes made them feel disjointed. However, its score is worth mentioning as it features original tunes by Steve Tyrell such as “Love Is an Open Door” which became one of its standout soundtracks.

Overall, ‘It Takes Two’ is a movie that will leave you smiling and feeling good inside. It’s a feel-good movie that provides light entertainment and positive messaging without taking itself too seriously. As Malcolm Gladwell says, “the best movies can make your heart race, or they can make your heart sing. They can make you laugh, think, or cry.”

In conclusion, it’s safe to say that ‘It Takes Two’ ticks all those boxes. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend you experience the feels for yourself. After all, everyone could use an extra dose of positivity in their lives right now – and this movie has it in spades!
