Review

In the depths of the inferno, where sinners do dwell, there lies a movie that has captured the attention of many. Devil, a fiery production directed by John Erick Dowdle, made its debut in 2010 and has been a hot topic of discussion amongst critics and moviegoers alike. This Shakespearean writer, too, cannot help but be intrigued by its plot.

The story is set in an elevator, one that is cursed with the presence of five strangers who are all going about their day. They are trapped between floors and as the minutes tick away, it becomes evident that things are not as they seem. One amongst them is not human but rather satanic in nature. The devil is amongst them and wants to take one of them to hell with him.

As the tension rises with each passing moment, viewers are transported into a world where it’s every man for himself. The group does their best to try and identify who among them is demonic and how they can escape their current situation. In a thrilling series of events that will keep you on edge throughout the movie, viewers will be captivated till the end.

The film stars Chris Messina as Bowden – an investigator who carries past guilt – and Logan Marshall-Green as Vincent – a former marine who may or may not have PTSD – along with Bojana Novakovic who plays Sarah Caraway – an abrasive woman who has seen better days.

The character development was impressive as we see each one of them struggle with their inner demons. It was heartening to see how they use grit and faith to overcome fear while keeping their character intact.

One cannot overlook the score created by Fernando Velázquez, which truly sets the mood for this thriller film. The haunting melodies further add fuel to this already terrifying storyline. Every note strikes fear into our hearts as it creates an atmosphere where anything can happen.

The cinematography is top-notch: lighting is used to highlight each character’s transition from normalcy to fear, and the camera angles create a sense of claustrophobia that is felt by all. We literally feel trapped in the elevator with them.

When it comes to awards, it’s worth mentioning that Devil was nominated for Best Horror Film at Scream Awards 2010. Although it did not walk away with the trophy, this gesture does signify its impact on the movie industry and how well it has been received by audiences.

As we dive deeper into this thrilling drama, one cannot help but acknowledge the subtle nods to religion and philosophical beliefs. The concept of a devil amongst us is not new but here it takes on a new form. While some may believe that living in sin leads to damnation, others may think otherwise. For these five strangers trapped in an elevator, they must now confront these different beliefs.

The dialogue between characters was masterfully crafted and delivered impeccably by the actors who embodied every phrase with their performances. The dark humour employed throughout will leave you questioning your own moral compass which is very impressive indeed.

Despite being a low-budget production, the special effects were noteworthy as they added an extra layer of horror and suspense for viewers to enjoy. It made us feel like we were witnessing an epitome of an epic religious showdown between good and evil forces transpiring right before our very eyes.

In conclusion, Devil could be considered one of those hidden gems that gets overlooked by many but is definitely worth your time especially if you crave something that will keep you biting your nails till the end credits roll. The story deserves praise for its originality while still staying true to its roots in religious concepts. Ultimately what makes this film so compelling is its ability to bring out our deepest fears and test our faith against adversity – something Shakespeare would appreciate if he was alive today.
