There is a certain charm to movies that make us appreciate the beauty of life on earth. One such movie that beautifully encapsulates this sentiment is The Earthling. Released in 1980, the film features a stellar cast which includes William Holden, Ricky Schroder, and Jack Thompson. It’s a story about survival, hope, and discovering one’s place in the world.
The movie begins with an astronaut named Patrick Foley (William Holden) who is on a mission to space when his shuttle malfunctions and crashes down on earth. He finds himself alone in the Australian outback with only six months left to live due to an illness. His search for help leads him to a group of orphaned children who have been living in isolation since their parents’ deaths.
Foley finds solace in helping the children survive by teaching them survival skills and slowly prepares them for life on their own. He even helps them come up with a plan to farm their land so they can sustain themselves in the long term.
